Learn more about our services and how we help you overcome the symptoms of macular degeneration.
Macular degeneration is among the many eye diseases affecting individuals. It is a disease that cannot be cured. However, the symptoms of macular degeneration can be treated effectively by your Oak Park eye doctor. Also known as age-related macular degeneration, this eye disease is the result of fatty deposits under the retina. Over time these deposits build up and lead to vision loss in the center of your field of vision. There are two types of macular degeneration. Individuals with wet macular degeneration suffer from leaking blood vessels also under the retina. Dry macular degeneration leads to deterioration of the retina and blindness.
Unfortunately, there are not too many symptoms of macular degeneration. The primary sign is blurred or waved vision. For advanced cases, the center of the eye shows a dark dot, which is a result of vision loss. Since there are not too many symptoms of macular degeneration it is important to get regular eye exams by your Oak Park optometrist.
Dr. Tan is able to monitor your eye health and detects early signs of this eye disease. This is your greatest chance for treating the symptoms that accompany macular degeneration. If you are at risk for this eye disease you want to keep a check on your eye health more often with bi-annual eye exams at Compass Eye Care.
While macular degeneration treatment cannot cure this eye disease, it can help you to slow its progression. Treatment is also beneficial in reducing symptoms caused by macular degeneration. This may include lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking or changing your diet to include more nutrients for eye health. In fact, there is a special combination of nutrients called the AREDS formula that may benefit you. Your optometrist may also recommend eyewear to help you protect your eyes from the dangers of UV light. If your macular degeneration is progressing rapidly or your symptoms are becoming difficult to manage, you may be eligible for eye surgery. Your eye doctor can diagnose your condition and refer you to an eye surgeon who specializes in macular degeneration.
