Healthy eyes and good vision are important for your child’s success in school, sports, and other activities. That’s why you should schedule an Oak Park children's eye exam now.
Our knowledgeable Oak Park pediatric optometrist, Dr. Alex Tan, is committed to ensuring good eye health, eye function and visual acuity for your little one. If he detects any issues, corrective treatment can begin immediately.
Plan to bring your child into Compass Eye Care for his first eye exam as early as 6 months old. The fundamentals of his vision are in place by then, making it a great time to test eye function basics, such as eye teaming, focusing and object tracking. We check for issues such as strabismus (crossed eyes) or amblyopia (lazy eye) and recommend proper treatments to correct these problems if found.
By the time your child is 3 years old, good eyesight is needed for activities such as coloring, stacking blocks and recognizing shapes. This is the next milestone that makes pediatric vision testing appropriately. We’ll check for nearsightedness, farsightedness, possible eye diseases and retinal problems. We also test focusing ability, depth perception and color vision at this stage.
From here on out, you should schedule a visit with our Oak Park pediatric optometrist before every school year starts. Undiagnosed vision problems can lead to eye fatigue, headaches, and other conditions while straining to see the blackboard or read textbooks. We can correct the problem by prescribing corrective lenses.
We have a wide array of brand name child and adult glasses frames in stock at our Oak Park eye care clinic. This allows you and your child to pick out children's eye frames immediately after receiving a prescription from Dr. Tan. Our friendly staff can advise you on which frames look best with your child’s face shape and coloring, as well as which frame materials, match your child’s activities and lifestyle.
If you and your child decide contacts are best, we offer contact lens exams to ensure this is an option for your child’s vision needs. We also offer a contact lens fitting service. This determines which type of lenses your child needs to make wearing contacts as comfortable as possible. We can even help your child learn how to put contacts in during the contact lens fitting to ensure success when you get home.
When you schedule your visit with Dr. Tan, choose a time that’s best for your child’s schedule. Also, be prepared to answer questions about your child’s medical history, family history of vision problems and any allergies your child has. Be sure to bring up any signs of vision problems you’ve noticed, such as frequent blinking, failure to maintain eye contact or poor eye tracking skills.
